Acer Aspire One A110 with Samsung HS030GA hard drive
UPDATE: This drive died and I switched it for a Toshiba MK3008GAL, which also works great. See my more recent entry, The Acer Aspire One A110 hard drive massacree, revisited.
So the 16gb SSD in my Acer Aspire One A110 craptop finally went to the glue factory this week, and I replaced it with a Samsung HS030GA hard drive, apparently compatible with the drives from 5th generation iPods. I don't have much to add to tnkgrl's dismantling video (if you're doing this yourself, go watch it, it's long but she does an excellent job), other than one major gotcha: The ZIF connector cable used in the A110 will not fit into the Samsung drive; it's too big. You'll need a odd-ended 20.5mm cable (which I've seen called "Type A"). On one end of the connector you need a 0.35mm-thick (typically blue) connector which plugs into the motherboard; on the other, you'll want a 0.22mm (white) connector to plug into the drive. The cable I used was 100mm long, which seemed about right (a little longer than the standard one). Also don't forget that you'll need a good pair of side-cutters to cut away some protrusions on the inside of the AAO's casing; this is all explained in the video.
